I Take You by Eliza Kennedy Book Review

I Take You, Eliza Kennedy

Oh how much I wanted to like this book. The cover of this books is bright, stunning and funny (can a cover be funny?). The premise looked promising- Lily Wilder a NY lawyer, days away from her wedding to her archaeologist fiance is having cold feet,  normal right? But it's more than just cold feet- she kissed a guy, slept with another guy, all while trying to sort out her feelings for Will (the fiance). Aren't these things supposed to be sorted out before you decide to accept an engagement with a man you may or may not love?

The main character Lily is just a terribly selfish person and I'm not talking about all the infidelities that happened in the book. The marketing for I Take You mark it as a " wickedly hilarious" and "endlessly funny" and I find the book to be neither.Yes there were a lot of witty dialogues but there's a difference between a self-assured protagonist (who knows what she wants which in this case, she didn't) and just a plain selfish one that can only think about herself and doesn't realized the impact her actions and words mean to other people. She's also very judgmental of her parents and use their past actions as a crtuch and excuse for all the misery that she's experiencing with Will. While the author tries very hard to express her personal feelings about gender politics, monogamy and the discussion of infidelity, the finish product is just not quite right.

The book begins a week before the wedding. Lily is having second thoughts about the wedding because of her parents' past mishaps with marriage, Will's parents non-approval of Lily and just her general feeling towards Will. She loves alcohol and men way too much it seems to be in a committed relationship and yet she can't seem to break up with Will. At some point someone asked her if she was still going through with this "nonsense wedding" and she basically said yes, I am going through with this nonsense wedding. The pacing of the book is kind of slow until we get to the point where Lily discovered some of Will's secrets which upset her beyond belief to the point where she was able to finally articulate that she didn't want to get married. The worst part of this book? The ending was so bland and boring.

If you are interested in this kind of story line that involves infidelity that actually talks deeper about gender politics and perception, instead of reading this book, I highly recommend the Showtime series The Affair.

As always, thanks for reading.

Until next time,
